SEO for Tradesmen: How to Get More Leads Without Paying for Them

Over 85% of people find a local tradesperson on Google. Here's how to rank for the searches that bring paying work — without renting leads from a directory.

By Ivan Georgiev

More than 85% of homeowners start on Google when they need a tradesperson — even when a friend gave them a name. If your business is not showing up, you are handing that work to a competitor, or worse, renting it back from a lead-generation directory that sells the same enquiry to three other firms.

Good SEO fixes that. Here is what actually moves the needle.

1. Win the map, not just the website

For local trades, the Google Business Profile (the map pack) is often the first — and sometimes only — thing a customer sees. Claim it, fill it in completely, add real photos of your work, pick the right categories, and ask every happy customer for a review. This alone can lift you within weeks.

2. Build service pages, not blog fluff

The single biggest mistake tradesmen make with SEO is writing blog posts no one searches for. The pages that win paying work are service pages targeting exactly what customers type: "bathroom fitter in [town]", "emergency electrician near me", "kitchen renovation [area]".

This is the heart of a strong local SEO strategy: one clear page per service, per area you serve, each genuinely useful and built to convert.

3. Target buying-intent keywords

Not all searches are equal. "How does underfloor heating work" is someone researching. "Underfloor heating installer near me" is someone ready to book. Prioritise the second kind — the terms with a clear intent to hire.

4. Make the phone call easy

Ranking is wasted if the visitor cannot act. A fast, mobile-first site with a click-to-call button, a short enquiry form and visible trust signals (reviews, accreditations, real photos) turns rankings into booked jobs.

How long does it take?

Map and "near me" rankings often improve in the first few weeks. Competitive organic terms typically take three to six months. The payoff is durable: a page that ranks brings the phone call direct — no commission, no shared enquiries, no race to call back first.

We come from the trades

We built our reputation fitting bathrooms in London before we built software and ran marketing. We know which local searches convert because we have chased them ourselves. If you want SEO that brings work rather than vanity traffic, let's talk.
