Google Ads vs SEO for Small Businesses: Where Should You Spend First?

Ads bring leads today; SEO compounds for years. Here's a simple framework for deciding where a small business should put its first marketing pound.

By Ivan Georgiev

It is the question every growing business eventually asks: should we pay for Google Ads, or invest in SEO? Both put you in front of people searching for what you sell. They just work on different timelines — and the right answer depends on where your business is right now.

The honest trade-off

Google Ads buys leads today. Switch a campaign on and you can have qualified enquiries within hours. Switch it off and they stop. You are renting the top of the page.

SEO compounds over time. It takes months to build, but a page that ranks keeps bringing enquiries long after the work is done — and you own the asset.

A simple framework

Choose Google Ads first if you:

  • Need leads now (a new business, a launch, a quiet season).
  • Have a clear, profitable margin per job to fund the spend.
  • Want to test which services and messages convert before committing to SEO.

Choose SEO first if you:

  • Can wait three to six months for results to build.
  • Operate in a local market where ranking is achievable.
  • Want lower cost per lead over the long term.

For most businesses the real answer is both, in sequence: start with Google Ads to generate immediate work and learn what converts, then reinvest the proceeds into SEO so your cost per lead falls over time.

The mistake that wastes both

Sending paid traffic — or hard-won organic traffic — to a weak page. The ad or the ranking is only half the job; the page it lands on has to convert. This is why we build the landing page and run the campaign together. Most agencies stop at the click. We do not.

Measure what matters

Whichever you start with, measure it against booked revenue, not clicks or impressions. A campaign with a "great" click-through rate that produces no jobs is a failure; a quiet campaign that books work every week is a success.
